CFTRI Welcomes 2004-06 Batch Students of M.Sc. (Food Tech)
24 bright students selected from different parts of our country joined CFTRI, Mysore for the prestigious 2 Year M.Sc. Food Tech.
Course for the period 2004-06. Dr.V. Prakash, Director, CFTRI, and who is also the Chief Patron of CFTRI Alumni Association met
the students and wished them all success in their career. While welcoming to the course, he advised the students to work hard,
which is a key to success in life and make a holistic approach to inventive work for the benefit of the society.
Generous contribution by Prof. Hulse
The CFTRI Alumni Association is extremely thankful to Prof. Joseph H Hulse for his generous contribution to the "We care for the
Hungry Child" programme. In a simple function held on 28th April, 2004 at CFTRI, Mysore, Prof. Hulse appreciated the activities
of the association and wished further progress.

Born on 29th April.1929 in Magadi, Bangalore district, Dr. S. Ranganna graduated from the Banaras Hindu University in 1950. He completed his Post-graduate Diploma in Fruit & Vegetable Preservation from CFTRI in 1954. While in service during the year 1959, Dr. Ranganna acquired the Associateship at CFTRI which was equivalent to Master's Degree in Food Technology. Later on in 1973, he obtained his Ph.D in Food Technology from University of Mysore.
After serving in different capacities, he became the Head of the Human Resource Development Department in CFTRI and lead the Institute at National and International level in the areas of Food Science and Technology.
His significant achievements includes thermal processing of fruit and vegetable products, canning of acidified vegetables; strained baby food; encapsulation of citrus oils and spice oleoresins; low-methoxyl pectin, and stabilisation of cloud in citrus beverages.
He visited many countries abroad. To name a few, UK as British Council Fellow; FAO Rome as an Expert Consultant on Food Inspection; Common Wealth Secretariat in Colombo and Scientific Research Council, Jamaica as an Expert in Post-harvest Technology.
Dr. Ranganna was an active person and served different organisations in various capacities. He was a Professional Member and Fellow of AFST(I); Advisor, Food Laboratory, Sweedish International Development Agency, Sweden; Nominator for IDEA Awards, Sweden; Convenor for IFCON 1993; Editor-in-Chief for the IFCON 1993 Sourvenir.
Dr. Ranganna was recipient of many important awards which includes AFSTI - Gardener Award 1966; KU Patel Award of AIFPA 1970 & 1975; CFTRI Alumni Award 1989; and 20th Century Achievement Award of the American Biological Institute, USA.
He had published about 50 research papers; 20 reviews; and books in both national and international journals. His Book entitled 'Handbook of Analysis and Quality Control of Fruit and Vegetable Products' published by Tata McGraw-Hill, is a masterpiece and noted as a Bible for the Industry. His another book namely hand book on "Thermal processing and Aseptic Packaging" is under editorial review.
Dr Rangana left his mortal body for heavenly abode on 3rd April 2004 in Mysore. His sudden demise is a great loss to the members of his family and the scientific community.
Dr. Jiwan Singh Pruthi (1920 - 2003)
Dr.Jiwan Singh Pruthi, passed away on September 27, 2003, at the age of 83 after a brief illness. He was an outstanding Scientist and a great humanist who has been closely associated with the country's Food processing scenarios.
Dr. J.S. Pruthi born in the year 1920 had a brilliant academic career bedecked with numerous medals, prizes and scholarships. His impressive academic qualifications include M Sc. (Agr) degree followed by Ph.D., FRHS (Lond), FAFST (India), and FIIR (Paris). Dr. Pruthi was a well known authority on Food Science and Technology and had over 54 years of professional experience. He has authored ten monographs, six patents, six books, seven book chapters and 350 scientific publications in the field of Food Science and Technology.
Dr. Pruthi, had held several high position and he was the founder Director, Agmark Laboratories, Govt. of India, Nagpur, founder Director, CSIR Industrial Food Research Complex, Trivandrum. He was appointed as a consultant to Commonwealth Secretariat, London and Advisor, United Nations Development Programme and Co-operative League of USA.
Dr. Pruthi was one of the founder scientists of Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore where he had a distinguished career as a scientist devoted to research in the areas of spices, fruits and vegetables. He had led several Indian delegations abroad and drawing upon his expertise contributed to formulation of World Standards (ISO) for spice and spice products. In recognition of his eminence as a scientist who made significant contributions to various facets of Food Science and Technology, the CFTRI Alumni Association recently honoured Dr. J. S. Pruthi posthumously by conferring the Dr. G. S. SIDDAPPA MEMORIAL AWARD 2003 on 7th December 2003. Dr. Pruthi is survived by his sons and grand children.
