Engineering and Mechanical Maintenance is a support service department that caters to the maintenance needs of the electrical, refrigeration and mechanical sections of the institute. The department provide/maintain-(a) Electricity, water and gas; (b) Refrigeration facilities such as cold rooms, freezer rooms, air-conditioners and refrigeration equipment; (c) Electrical and electronic equipment in R&D laboratories and pilot plants.
The department always function in fine tune with the demands and trends of modernisation of the institute's R&D facilities. Accordingly, the department has incorporated appropriate energy-efficient systems, non-conventional energy resources such as solar heaters, automatic voltage stabilisers, UPS systems, automatic power factor control equipment and similar facilities into the institute's infrastructure.

The main objectives are:
· Providing reliable and uninterrupted power supply to the different wings of the institute
· Load management
· Incorporation of energy-efficient systems
With the installed capacity of a 400 kVA transformer (state power supply), supplemented by 380 kVA and 250 kVA generators, we cater to the 4000 kW connected load, by efficient load management practices and ensure supply of electrical power round the clock.

The department maintains 
· 23 cold rooms (of which 3 are freezer rooms at -20oC) at different temperatures
· 300 refrigerators, 60 freezers, freeze-dryers and similar R&D equipment
· Over 100 air-conditioners

To facilitate unhindered R&D work, we are efficiently operating and maintaining:
· An uninterrupted water supply system
· Steam lines and boilers
· Gas plants
· Motors, heaters and process equipment
· Automatic control panels (indigenous as well as imported)
