Being a National Laboratory committed to the scientific study of the most basic of human needs, CFTRI naturally recognised the importance of a public interface in its organisational structure at its very origin. It envisaged the role of this interface as one of building the institute's rapport with the various sections of the end-users of its R&D contributions, while also building the institute's image in the outside world. Initially, these activities were a part of the Information & Statistics (I&S) Department which carried a major thrust on the extension work of welfare-oriented technologies developed by the institute, expanding its mandate into newer research areas and producing more and more processes and technologies ready for transfer, the I&S Department was appropriately upgraded as Industrial Research, Consultancy and Extension Discipline with Public Relations and Publicity (PRP) as an exclusive unit within it. This unit eventually transformed into an independent entity and became the present Department of Information and Publicity.
