Established at the very inception of the institute as its Operations Research group, this department has now evolved into a true catalyst in the entire R&D management and internal administrative processes of the institute. The department not merely facilitate the flow of business-critical information between the director and the heads of the various departments, but compile information about strategic and policy issues and provide them promptly as vital information inputs in the institute's development process. The department also make available such invaluable information to various scientific institutions and R&D units in India and abroad. The department function with the mandate of sustaining the growth and vibrancy of the institute in tune with CSIR's vision of self-sustained national laboratories, committed to borderless research and development.

· Assisting the director with various information inputs for day-to-day and long-term business
· Assisting the Research Council in all R&D management aspects, including new project proposals and progress reports
· Monitoring both in-house and grant-in-aid projects
· Monitoring the ISO 9000 programme
· Preparing annual and five-year planning strategies
· Preparing Performance Indicators
· Running the MIS of the institute
· Assisting in the formulation of missions and modernisation projects
· Coordinating and processing the manuscripts on the institute's R&D work for publication in journals
· Publishing the CFTRI Performance Report annually
· Publishing concise documented volumes on the achievements of the institute for the benefit of visiting parliamentary committees and expert groups
· Preparing "State-of-the-art" reports on the thrust areas in food science and technology
· Coordinating with Project Investigators and expert groups
· Interacting with funding and scientific agencies
· Serving as faculty for the institute's academic programmes
· Logistic support in conducting seminars, conferences and symposia

Intellectual Property Management 

With India joining the WTO, and the growing realisation of the importance of food patents in the country, CFTRI's patenting activities have gathered significant momentum now. Accordingly, we have intensified our efforts to protect the intellectual properties of our scientists, and manage and market their patenting rights by-
· Promoting the knowledge of intellectual property
· Developing legal protection methods for the technologies developed
· Preparing databases on technologies currently patented in the field, for global competitiveness
· Guiding the process of filing the patents

· Database design, implementation and management
· Development of business intelligence using the latest data-warehousing and data-mining tools and database-farming concepts
· Advice on acquisition/adoption of software technologies, including those related to the Internet; system administration; and trouble-shooting

Projects Completed

One of the major projects coordinated by our department in transferring technology to the rural masses has resulted in the development of the Swarnajayanthi Complex for demonstration and training concerning appropriate technologies for the benefit of rural artisans and entrepreneurs in food and allied areas. The project was launched in commemoration of the 50th year of India's independence in 1997, and on its platform, a number of training programmes and workshops have been conducted so far for rural people, including women.
